Concrete Cutting – the Safety Precautions That You Should Follow

When you are working on a construction project, there will always be a time when you will need to do some core boring or concrete cutting. The job seems easy, especially if you have the proper tools at hand. However, you need to consider some things carefully to ensure your safety while engaging yourself in this construction work. Here are some of the precautionary measures that you should follow.

Dust Control

The dust that comes from the cement can bring potential harm to your eyes and lung sinuses. Furthermore, too much dust can also cause damages to the surrounding finish, due to its corrosiveness and abrasiveness. Therefore, dust control not only protects your health, but also an essential factor in ensuring the quality of your work.

You have two options when it comes to dust control methods. You can control dust either through wet cutting, or with the use of pneumatic tools designed for this purpose.

In wet cutting, cooling water collects the concrete dust from the surface being cut. The water also lubricates and cools down the blades, which can lead for a longer lifespan of your cutting tools. However, you need to make sure that you will provide drainage, or use a wet vac. to control the spread of water.

Make Sure That Your Electric Tools Have Proper Grounding

You need to make sure that your electric power tools have insulation, sufficient grounding, as well as proper ground fault protection. There will be times that you might accidentally step on a wet surface, while using your electric tools and this could lead to fatal accident if the necessary protections are not present.

Use Extra Precaution When Using Core Drilling Tools

To keep the base in place, most core drilling machines rely on suction. However, you need to remember that when you drill, the friction of the base is resisting rotation. This means, that if the floor is wet, you will have a better suction seal, but this also offers less resistance to rotation, causing your tool to slip out of target. On the other hand, the roughness of a surface provides more resistance to rotation, but may cause your suction seal to break off.

When you are performing a drilling operation, you need to keep in mind that your vacuum seal is not 100% reliable, and may fail anytime. Therefore, you need to be alert and must keep your body away from the possible rotation path of your drilling machine.

Always Know What Is Beneath the Surface

When you are doing cutting or drilling operation, you need to make sure that you know what is beneath the surface. The surface may contain rocks and rebar that might damage your tools. More importantly, there might be plumbing pipes, or electrical wires hidden beneath the surface area you are planning to cut or drill a hole with. Therefore, you need assess with precision the location of your piping lines and electrical wirings before starting your work.

True, concrete cutting could be easy especially when you have the proper tools around. However, safety is not something that you can take for granted, and you must do everything to ensure that accidents will not happen.
